Making Your Own Coasters

I picked up this placemat several months ago. The second I saw it, I knew that I was going to cut it up and make coasters.
The hardest part about making coasters is the backing. You want to put something on the bottom of the coasters so that won't scratch up your table but will keep the coaster in place. You also want something that is water resistant.
I have plenty of cork pieces hanging around but I think cork is hard to work with sometimes. And, you good people might not have spare cork lying around. So I pulled out felt and shelf liner.
This placemat is pretty flimsy so I technically could have cut it with scissors. Your place mat might be a little thicker so you can use a straight edge and a craft knife. I taped my placemat to my cutting mat so that during the swipes of the craft knife, my placemat wouldn't move.
Once you cut your shape and clean it all up, you add your backing to your mat piece. Because I was using felt and shelf liner, I decided to try Fabri-Tac. Word on the crafting street is that Fabri-Tac is the best glue for fabric. I'm not sure but I didn't want to take any chances.
So far the glue has held. I've used two of my coasters several times and I like the results. The shelf liner didn't hold as well as the felt. So, if you are wondering what I plan on using for my next coaster projects is the felt.
